sail-bike?
what about a bike that doesnt have pedals but instead a sail?
besides the bike, about 30 feet of good rope, an old bed sheet and a couple of good 6 foot sticks would be all that you would need. maybe a helmet would be a good idea too.

I'm no physicist ... but I'm thinking that there's gonna be too much ...friction, is that the word? between bike and ground, compared to boat and water.

Hey! Did you google it yet? Check http://www.vsv.cape.com/~harharb/windbike.html "Wear a helmet and heavy clothes. Do not try this unless you are a very experienced bike rider and thoroughly understand the power of sail."

yes!, in fact, i also found this site and also dug up the Nov '67 nattie geographic and read that articles about bike-sailing across the sahara.
very intriguing!
they blew a lot of tires and this tells me it is not so practical and validates your thought that the amount of friction severely impairs its viability.
